Essential Functions • Leadership: Provides consistent and fair oversight. Clinical chaplains at UNC Medical Center complete documentation for patient encounters, provide 24 hour back-up coverage in rotation with other pastoral care staff members, lead worship services in the hospital chapel as needed, teach didactics within the Department of Pastoral Care and in the hospital community, serve as a mentor to CPE residents, and complete administrative and other tasks as assigned according to the spiritual needs of the institution. |

Children are especially vulnerable the psychological stresses of being in the hospital, and the Stad Center seeks to provide holistic care to pediatric patients and their caregivers to ensure that pain, symptom, emotional, existential, spiritual, and when needed religious, needs are met. The chaplain is an integrated part of the transdisciplinary Stad Center’s Palliative Care Service team, providing expert consultative services across the hospital, and working collaboratively with providers from all disciplines. In addition to the chaplain’s role on the Stad Center’s inpatient team (80% of the time), the chaplain also serves as a member of the Spiritual Care Services department (20% time). Spiritual Care Services provides multi-faith, emotional, intellectual, crisis, and spiritual support to the patients, parents/guardians, families, visitors, and interdisciplinary staff of UCSF by establishing and maintaining relationships that enable care for people in the context of their spiritual or existential needs and resources. Spiritual Care Services also provides 24/7 on-call coverage and runs a Clinical Pastoral Education program; this position provides some general clinical coverage related to this department and mentoring support for trainees in the CPE program.Required Qualifications Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in a clinical environment. Children are especially vulnerable to the psychological stresses of being in the hospital, and IP3 seeks to provide holistic care to pediatric patients and their caregivers to ensure that pain, symptom, emotional, existential, spiritual, and when needed religious, needs are met. The chaplain is an integrated part of the transdisciplinary IP3 team, providing expert consultative services across the hospital, and working collaboratively with providers from all disciplines. In addition to the chaplain’s role on the IP3 team (80% of the time), the chaplain also serves as a member of the Spiritual Care Services department (20% time). Spiritual Care Services provides multi-faith, emotional, intellectual, crisis, and spiritual support to the patients, parents/guardians, families, visitors, and interdisciplinary staff of UCSF by establishing and maintaining relationships that enable care for people in the context of their spiritual or existential needs and resources. Spiritual Care Services also provides 24/7 on-call coverage and runs a Clinical Pastoral Education program; this position provides some general clinical coverage related to this department as well as mentoring support for trainees in the CPE program.Required Qualifications Five (5) or more years of experience in pediatric care, including experience in palliative pediatric care Master’s degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or its equivalent in relevant training/experience. Completion of at least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education, accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. Proven knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in a clinical environment. Highly skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability. Advanced knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate spiritual care in a multi-faith clinical setting. Competent knowledge of the ethical and confidentiality issues involved with clinical chaplaincy. Highly flexible and highly adaptable to remain calm, and deal effectively with changing situations involving crises and stress. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work with and accept people of diverse beliefs, cultures, ethnicities, ages, and health conditions. Advanced ability to work independently with patients and families, while also participating in the healthcare team providing coordinated care. Proven organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills. In-depth knowledge of spiritual assessment models, solid spiritual assessment skills, and the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing, spiritual assessments of patients/families to the health care team. Works with the Catholic Resident Champion to ensure that Catholic Residents at Lenbrook receive mass or communion from a Catholic Priest or Deacon. Assists in helping secure Vespers Speakers once a month. Secures a Jewish Rabbi/and or Cantor to lead the monthly Shabbat services. Oversees the Shabbat meal after the Shabbat Service; works in tandem with the Dining Service staff regarding reservations and choice of entrée. Triages the Lenbrook deaths in real time. This includes (but is not limited to) pastoral care to the bereaved family members and the posting of death notices on Lenbrook All, K4 Connect and Nixplay on a timely basis. Co-facilitates support groups for Lenbrook with fellow IDT members. Works with the Vespers music director (pianist) to secure special music for the Vespers services whenever possible. Assists Senior Chaplain in writing weekly check requests on an as needed basis. Oversees the needs of the weekly Women’s Bible Study and Men’s Bible Study. Serves as a Worship Leader, along with the Senior Chaplain, for the Sunday Worship Service. Serves as the clinical supervisor for the seminary Intern on an as needed basis. Visits Lenbrook Residents in the hospital on an as needed basis. Visits new Lenbrook residents to introduce them to the Spiritual Wellness programming and services. Completes pastoral referrals. Prints and delivers Chaplains Birthday cards to the residents on a monthly basis. Attends weekly IDT (Interdisciplinary Team) meetings; collaborates and communicates with IDT members regarding the fluid psychosocial and spiritual needs of Lenbrook Residents. Works in tandem with the Senior Chaplain to ensure seamless communication concerning the fluid pastoral care needs of the Lenbrook community. |
